Training students to succeed in the demanding field of cardiology technology takes more than just experienced teachers. It also requires hands-on instruction with the advanced diagnostic instruments now used in Canada’s health centres.
At Everest College of Business, Technology and Health Care – Ottawa East, students in the school’s Cardiology Technologist program get trained on the types and models of cardiology instruments they’re most likely to encounter in the modern medical community. Courses in Everest’s Cardiology Technologist program include:
- Cardiac Anatomy and Physiology
- ECG Fundamentals
- Basic Arrhythmias
- ECG Clinical Practice
- Advanced Arrhythmias
- Implantable Cardiac Devices
- Coronary Artery Disease and Myocardial Infarction
- Specialty Leads
- Exercise Tolerance Testing
- Associated Cardiac Abnormalities
- Cardiac Pharmacology
- Cardiac Procedures
- Pediatrics
- Ambulatory Monitoring
Once training is completed,— a process that can be completed in as little as nine months — graduates are eligible to take the Canadian Society of Cardiology Technologists (CSCT) exam, which sets performance standards and provides continuing education for professionals in this field. If successfully passed, graduates will attain the designation of Registered Cardiology Technologist (RCT).
Career Prospects and Opportunities
According to Service Canada’s most recent employment survey (November 2008), “the number of medical electrophysiology technicians should increase sharply over the next few years.” Service Canada, which is part of the government’s Human Resources and Skills Development department, attributes this predicted rise to an increase in conditions requiring diagnosis due principally to the country’s aging population.
Career opportunities include positions in cardiovascular clinics, physicians’ offices, medical laboratories and diagnostic imaging centres.
