Rather than reducing employment opportunities, the computerization of accounting is actually increasing the demand for accountants, especially for entry-level candidates who know how to operate popular accounting software, according to Service Canada (www.servicecanada.gc.ca), the Canadian government’s nation-wide service transformation initiative, launched in 2005.
Basing its projections on August 2008 data, Service Canada reports, “The computerization of accounting and the availability of constantly improving software programs could have greatly discouraged employment growth in this occupation. However, these tools also allow accounting clerks to perform an increasing number of activities that were historically entrusted to accountants, and to create many reports that used to be impossible to produce.”
As a result, Service Canada projects employment opportunities for accounting clerks to increase 2.3 percent between 2008 and 2012, compared to 1.1 percent for the national average. “Jobs will be available primarily for graduates with a Vocational Studies Diploma (DEP), Diploma of College Studies (DEC) or an Attestation of College Studies (AEC) in administration (business administration, accounting, secretarial studies, office system technology, etc),” the report states.
