Esthetics is a relatively new career field. Put as simply as possible, esthetics is the science of beauty. On a more practical level, it is the science of skin care — the use of various products, technologies and techniques to make one's skin and the face, in particular, as attractive as possible without the use of invasive surgery.
Tools of the trade include make-up, chemicals (e.g. cleansers, exfoliates), masks and devices such as hair removal equipment.
Professional estheticians work in a variety of environments, including:
- Spas and beauty salons
- Photography studios
- Destination resorts
- Wellness centres
- Television and motion picture production companies
- Bridal and special event companies
- Medical practices (e.g. plastic surgery centres)
- Mortuaries
Many estheticians also choose to work freelance or start their own businesses.
Preparing for Your Esthetics Career
Although most employers do not require esthetician applicants to have a college degree, some special training and experience is usually required to enter the field. In the Mississauga area, many estheticians-to-be are turning to Everest College of Business, Technology and Health Care to learn the art and science of esthetics and get professional support in finding employment upon graduation.
