In Ontario, professional massage therapists are registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario (CMTO) and are members of the Registered Massage Therapists’ Association of Ontario (RMTAO). Registration confirms that the massage therapist has the education and skills needed to practice professionally and subscribes to the profession's ethical guidelines. Registration protects the public from unqualified massage therapy practitioners and helps maintain a high level of professionalism throughout the industry.
So how do you become a registered massage therapist? Here are the steps:
1. Complete an educational program at a school recognized by the Ontario Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and the CMTO.
2. Register with the CMTO. This requires passing a two-part test. Part one is a multiple-choice written examination. The second part is an objective structured clinical evaluation (OSCE) where you must demonstrate your mastery of common massage therapy techniques.
3. Upon passing the CMTO examination, you will be issued a certificate of registration.
