Researchers from Sweden’s Umea University have established a positive physiological response to “touch massage,” a light form of massage that focuses on the hands and feet. Comparing the physiological responses of subjects receiving touch massage for 80 minutes and later simply relaxing in a prone position for the same period, the researchers found that just five minutes of touch massage could lower heart rates for up to 65 minutes. Salivary coristol, a stress hormone, and insulin were also measurably lower during and following touch massage. The results were the same when the test subjects relaxed first and then received 80 minutes of touch massage.
Massage has long been thought to improve overall health by reducing stress and the conditions associated with it. The Umea University study adds further documentation to this belief.
