If you're considering a law enforcement career, keep in mind that "law enforcement" can mean more than just traditional police work. There is a whole range of law enforcement and law enforcement-related careers in both the public and private sectors that don't involve wearing a badge and carrying a gun.
To prepare for these jobs, many students take Everest College of Business, Technology and Health Care's Law Enforcement Foundations career education program at the school's Barrie campus. In less than a year, students at Everest cover a wide range of career-relevant topics, including:
- Sociology
- Psychology
- Ethics
- Contemporary Social Problems
- Issues in Diversity and First Nations People
- Canadian Government and Politics
- Law and the Legal System
- Criminology and the Criminal Justice System
- Criminal Code and Federal Statutes
- Police Authority/Search/Seizure/Arrest
- Community Policing
- Introduction to Law Enforcement
With this background, Everest’s Law Enforcement Foundations graduates are able to compete for a variety of positions in such fields as:
1. Private Security. Private firms provide everything from armored car services to corporate security. Students who are able to combine their study of law enforcement with military service or computer programming/security experience are particularly attractive to such organizations.
2. Retail Security. Shopping centres, department stores and other major retail establishments all have a need for professionals to handle security programs that combat shoplifting, vandalism and other criminal activity.
3. Private Investigation. Modern P.I.'s handle everything from personal background checks to missing persons investigations to acquiring evidence for divorce litigation.
4. Campus Enforcement. There are private agencies throughout Ontario that provide security services to college campuses and similar public and private facilities.
5. Conservation Officer. Conservation officers are public employees who patrol parks and other natural areas to enforce environmental legislation, check hunting and fishing parties for licenses, advise visitors on safety regulations, prevent theft and vandalism, and otherwise see to the peace and security of these valuable areas.
6. Railway Police. Railway police provide security, prevent altercations and investigate wrong-doing on our nation's railway system.
And, if you are able to qualify for additional training, you also have the option of pursuing a career as an actual police officer. Police Services in Ontario, and the rest of Canada, have special requirements for those entering a career as a law enforcement officer. Students wishing to pursue such careers should ensure that they would be able to meet the physical and educational requirements before enrolling.
