Before you can become an intra-oral (level II) dental assistant, you need to write the national level II exam offered by the National Dental Assistant Examination Board (II). The NDAEB ensures that individuals have met the current national baseline standard in the knowledge and skills required by Canadian provincial or territorial regulatory authorities for recognition as an intra-oral dental assistant. All level II dental assistants practicing in Ontario are required to hold an NDAEB certificate.
Required Skills
The NDAEB requires certification applicants to have received formal training in the following dental office procedures:
- Chairside dental assisting
- Exposing dental radiographs
- Oral hygiene instruction
- Dietary counseling relative to oral health
- Selective coronal polishing
- Application and removal of dental dam
- Taking preliminary impressions
- Treatment liner application
- Matrix and wedge application and removal
- Fluoride application
- Pit and fissure sealant application
- Application of desensitizing agents
- Topical anesthetic application
- Tooth whitening using trays
You can acquire these skills — and more — by taking the Intra-Oral (Level II) Dental Assistant career education program offered at the London campus of Everest College of Business, Technology and Health Care.
About the Everest Program
Everest's 10-month program begins by teaching a wide range of dental office procedures and clinical laboratory skills (level I), followed by instruction and practical experience in various dental intra-oral skills (level II). By completing level I, students qualify to write the certification exam offered by the Ontario Dental Assistant Association (ODAA) and, upon passing, attain the designation of certified dental assistant (CDA). Upon completing their level II courses, they can apply to write the NDAEB exam and, upon passing receive their NDAEB certificate.
This program is taught by dental professionals and features significant hands-on work in simulated dental office settings. Classes are small to make sure every student gets the attention and support he/she needs. Upon graduation, Everest students can seek help from the college's Career Services department, which offers support with everything from resume writing to identifying and contacting potential employers.
About the London Campus
Everest College's London campus is situated in Wellington Square at 250 York Street in downtown London, Ontario (N6A 6K2). The campus is accessible by both car and London Transit bus. The campus is close to local daycare centres, restaurants and shopping.
