How to Think Like a Network Administrator

Network AdministratorNetwork administrators keep today's business computer networks communicating with each other and working smoothly to perform the various tasks they are assigned. When a company sets up shop, it's the network administrator who connects the desktop computers together and gets them working as a team. When computers, printers, scanners or other peripherals are added, removed or replaced, it's the network administrator who gets them working. Network administrators often make sure networks remain secure and uncorrupted by viruses and malware. They update software. They troubleshoot problems. They play the part of a traffic cop, a detective and, when necessary, a SWAT team in the world of business computing.

Sound like an interesting career? It can be if you are able to think like a network administrator. Here are the skills you need to perform the job:

Critical Thinking. You need to be able to look at a situation and analyze it honestly, without emotion or prejudice.

Systems Analysis. A big part of being a network administrator is understanding the system as a whole, its individual parts, and how these individual parts work with each other.

Monitoring. You need to be able to stay on top of your network's activity and spot little problems before they become big ones.

Active Listening. In addition to computers, a network administrator frequently deals with people. You need to be able to listen to their problems, frustrations, complaints and, every so often, an actual constructive suggestion or two so you can keep everyone happy and productive.

Prioritizing. As a network administrator, you will often be given more assignments than you can handle during a given workday. You need to be able to identify which tasks are the most important and tend to those first.
